These Thriving Schools Are Making Good Health a Reality

Eighteen K-12 schools earn cash awards for committing to create healthy school environments.

Posted on

This spring, eighteen local schools were awarded $72,000 in grants for making healthier schools a reality. The grant awards are part of the national Thriving Schools initiative, a wide-ranging effort to improve the health of students, staff and teachers in K-12 schools by making the healthy choice the easy choice.

To be eligible for a grant, schools working with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation through the Thriving Schools initiative were asked to develop and implement action plans that lead to enhanced school wellness programs.

Grant recipients will use the funds to implement their action plans and create a healthier school environment by providing physical activity equipment to students and staff, adding water filters, enhancing kitchen and lounge areas, and supplying wellness materials.

Evidence indicates that physical activity and better nutrition in schools can increase focus and attention, decrease discipline problems, improve attendance, boost academic achievement, and improve the health of students. Programs like Thriving Schools help to improve the overall health of schools and communities by providing schools with resources to implement healthy action plans.
