Jenesse Center Facility Refresh

50 KP West LA volunteers suprised the Jenesse Center, the oldest domestic violence intervention program in LA, with a much needed facility refresh.

At Jenesse Center, the oldest domestic violence intervention program in Los Angeles, volunteer help plays a critical role in fulfilling the Center’s mission - to provide shelter and life-saving programs for thousands of families each year. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 2012, about 50 KP West LA participants gathered at various Jenesse Center facilities, including an education center and transitional housing site, to enhance existing facilities. Volunteers painted offices and apartments and organized warehouses at the Center’s emergency and transitional shelters.

“This was a huge project and my staff could not do it alone. We are a small organization and time and resources are really scarce,” said Brenda Adway, customer care manager at Jenesse Center. “This is what I imagined when I thought about what this place should look like. I can’t tell you how great it is to be able to see everything that we have and just come into these warehouses and immediately be able to get what the clients need.” 

Adway also received a special surprise that day – her small, makeshift work area was transformed into a real office.

Volunteers also created a new garden at the Education Center, which holds classes Mondays through Fridays. Many families are taking advantage of this green space by growing plants and vegetables there.
