Working together to build a healthier community for all of us.

Kaiser Permanente believes when we collaborate and support each other, our work improves the quality of health and life in our communities.

We are dedicated to total health of body, mind, and spirit, and we pursue efforts that broaden access to the highest quality care for people when they need it. We believe all of us deserve to live healthy lives in our homes, our workplaces, and our neighborhoods. That’s why, for more than 65 years, we have worked to improve the health of our members and the communities we serve.

We accomplish this work in countless ways, from funding knowledge and resource sharing programs that address health disparities to providing assistance with health care costs to people in need. Our commitment is exhibited in the many ways we reach out and work with others to build a healthy future for all.

Giving Hope

As a child growing up in Jamaica, Hope Miller saw many people in desperate need for sufficient medical care. The lack of resources and trained health care professionals in her country inspired her to become a nurse herself. She is committed to helping the people of Jamaica get the care they need.

In 2001, Hope founded Caribbean Health Outreach, a nonprofit organization that provides medical services and health education to people living in the Caribbean, with a special focus on her native Jamaica.

Through the organization, Hope recruits medical volunteers to spend one week a year in rural Jamaica, where poverty and access to expert medicine is at its worst. Many physicians and nurses come from Kaiser Permanente, and often work in tents with no running water. Still, they manage to see hundreds of patients, many of whom are seeing a doctor for the first time. Hope is also able to arrange for follow-up appointments and medicines, as needed.

The rest of the year she devotes time toward raising funds for her organization, which also lends support to schools and orphanages in Jamaica and pays the salaries of two physicians in Haiti.

When asked why she so generously gives of herself, she answers with her favorite quote, from Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
