The Diagnostic Imaging and Nuclear Medicine Medical Physics Residency Program offered by Kaiser Permanente, Southern California Permanente Medical Group is designed to provide clinical, technical, and professional physics education and training necessary to develop clinical medical physics expertise and qualify for the American Board of Radiology (ABR) certification examinations. This program has been CAMPEP accredited since 2020.
The residency training occurs in 15 regional hospitals and affiliated medical offices across Southern California. The curriculum provides comprehensive, mentored, hands-on experience, and progressive responsibility providing the opportunity to work towards becoming fully independent upon completion of the program. The medical physics resident will be expected to work in this training position for three years and will receive training in diagnostic and nuclear medical physics.
Major Responsibilities/Essential Function

Acceptance testing on all types of radiological imaging equipment to meet new equipment specifications and baseline image quality assurance metrics.

Radiation dosimetry calculations and computerized data analysis.

Equipment surveys including State of California, American College of Radiology (ACR) and Joint Commission required testing of diagnostic modalities such as radiography, fluroscopy, mammography, CT, ultrasound, MRI, and nuclear medicine equipment.

Clinical medical physics support of diagnostic imaging modalities to maintain compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements.

Research support as well as health system staff training and education.

Administrative efforts with regards to inspections and regulations.

Other assigned duties including proper and complete documentation of clinical projects and clinical rotations.
Addmission Requirements
Minimum Education:
Candidates must have a strong foundation in basic physics, demonstrated by an undergraduate or graduate degree in medical physics, physics, engineering, or a closely related discipline. In addition, candidates must have successfully completed either a CAMPEP-accredited MS or PhD graduate program, or a CAMPEP-accredited certificate program.
Additional Requirements:
Candidates must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, basic knowledge in radiation physics, and a strong interest in working with a multidisciplinary medical team.

CAMPEP Residency Standard 2.11: A program must publicly describe the program and the achievements of its residents, preferably through a publicly‐accessible website. This information must be updated no less often than annually and must include the numbers of applicants to the program, applicants offered admission, residents entering the program, and graduates. Information on the destinations of graduates shall also be provided, i.e., numbers in academics, clinical practice, industry positions, etc.
Salary and Benefits
Kaiser Permanente, Southern California Permanente Medical Group provides a competitive salary and benefits package starting at $72,000 (for 2024-2025) and progressing at the beginning of subsequent academic years.Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance, life and disability insurance, sick and vacation leave, annual travel and education allowances.
