Surgery Program Provides Life-changing Treatment

29 uninsured San Diegans received life-changing medical treatment on Saturday, April 12 for free.

Veronica’s dream of pain-free comfort finally came true after 26 years, thanks to Kaiser Permanente’s Saturday Surgery Program which treated her painful, chronic tonsillitis.

Veronica is just one of 29 uninsured San Diegans who received life-changing medical treatment on Saturday, April 12 for free. This one-day event held twice a year in partnership with the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation’ Project Access, is a great source of pride for KP San Diego. It features 150 physicians and volunteer staff who provide a variety of medical care and, in turn, truly transform lives by giving these patients a healthier, brighter future.

This was the 13th Saturday Surgery Day at Kaiser Permanente since Project Access’ inception in December 2009. To date, we have locally contributed more than $2.4 million in donated services to Project Access San Diego.

Although a portion of the patients are employed, they do not have health insurance or the resources to pay for surgeries. That’s where our team comes in. Since we started this program, more than 2,400 patients have received free specialty care, including both inpatient and outpatient surgeries and procedures. It is a rewarding experience for all KPSD employees and physicians who participate.

Our goal is to do everything in our power to enhance the lives of those who are ill or injured. Saturday Surgery Day provides us with the ability to do just that – to use our talents to give back to San Diegans in need.
